KISS formed in New York City in 1973 and transformed
Hard rock into full-scale spectacle. Founded by
Paul Stanley and
Gene Simmons , and soon completed by
Ace Frehleyand
Peter Criss, the band combined heavy riffs with theatrical visuals inspired by comic books, horror films, and
glam rock. Their use of face paint, pyrotechnics, blood-spitting, fire-breathing, and smoking guitars set a new standard for live rock shows.
After early studio albums struggled to fully capture their impact, 1975’s Alive! Became a breakthrough, documenting the raw power of their concerts and turning KISS into an international phenomenon. Each member adopted a distinct onstage persona — The Starchild, The Demon, The Spaceman, and The Catman — helping the band build a mythology that went far beyond the music.
Throughout the late 1970s, albums like Destroyer, Rock and Roll Over, and Love Gun produced enduring anthems while KISS became pioneers of music merchandising, licensing their image on everything from action figures to pinball machines. Despite frequent lineup changes and shifting musical trends, the band maintained a fiercely loyal global fanbase.
With over 100 million records sold worldwide and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, KISS remain one of rock’s most recognizable and influential acts — proof that showmanship and volume, when done right, can become history.
