Glam-rock sparkle meets jukebox nostalgia: the Rubettes burst onto the scene in 1973 as a crack session team who accidentally struck gold with the falsetto-driven smash “Sugar Baby Love.” Its original singer, Paul DaVinci, quit right before the track took off—one of pop history’s great “what-ifs”—leaving Alan Williams to front a band suddenly topping charts worldwide.

Behind the white caps and candy-coated harmonies sat a group unafraid to take risks. In 1976 they released “Under One Roof,” a rare, early pop song tackling homophobia—so daring that rumours swirled it had been made too uncommercial in hopes the label would drop them.

Though later singles never matched their debut’s success, the Rubettes kept touring for decades, cycling through line-up changes while delivering the timeless mix of glam swagger, teen-dream melodies, and unexpected depth that still fascinates long-time fans.
