Placebo

Emerging from London in 1994, Placebo quickly became a standout act in the alternative rock scene, known for androgynous style, edgy guitar riffs, and emotionally raw performances. The band was founded by Brian Molko (vocals, guitar) and Stefan Olsdal (bass, guitar), later joined by drummer Robert Schultzberg, who was replaced by Steve Hewitt in 1996. Their name, Latin for “I shall please,” reflects the band’s provocative, boundary-pushing approach to both music and image.

Placebo’s self-titled debut album (1996) introduced their signature sound: moody, melodic, and tinged with glam-punk attitude. Hits like “Nancy Boy” and “36 Degrees” immediately established them as a bold voice in ’90s rock. Their follow-up, Without You I’m Nothing (1998), further cemented their status with fan favorites “Pure Morning” and the titular track, famously re-recorded with David Bowie, reflecting a close relationship between the band and the legend himself. They also performed at Bowie’s 50th birthday concert, a milestone that highlights their early recognition in the music world.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Placebo released albums such as Black Market Music (2000), Sleeping With Ghosts (2003), and Meds (2006), maintaining a loyal international fanbase. Known for exploring themes of identity, sexuality, addiction, and alienation, the band became anthemic for fans who felt on the fringes. Their live performances — intense, energetic, and often cathartic — are a defining part of their legacy, with Molko’s piercing vocals and Olsdal’s intricate basslines creating a hypnotic, immersive experience.
