Incognito, founded in 1979 by guitarist and bandleader Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick, is one of the true architects of the acid jazz movement—and one of its most enduring. Known for its constantly evolving lineup, the band became famous for turning the idea of a “collective” into a fine art: over the decades, Bluey has worked with hundreds of musicians, many of whom went on to major careers of their own.

Fans love the story that Incognito’s breakthrough track “Always There” (with Jocelyn Brown on vocals) became so big in UK clubs that it essentially cemented the acid jazz sound overnight. Another favourite tidbit: their stylish cover of “Don’t You Worry ’bout a Thing” remains one of the most played tracks in London’s soul and jazz bars—sometimes even more than Stevie Wonder’s original.
