When drummer Maurice White founded Earth, Wind & Fire in Chicago in 1970, he surely didn't expect that ten years later, the avantgarde jazz-funk band would become one of the biggest R&B hit machines. Their first two albums, "Earth, Wind And Fire" (1971) and "The Need Of Love" (1971), which are highly sought after among collectors, do not seem like hits at first, but they charm the listener with subtle soul-jazz sounds. No wonder: Jean Carn and her husband Doug were also involved. When White got the charismatic lead singer Philip Bailey on board, the group's sound would soon significantly change again - the rest is chart history.
