Barbara Mandrell

Born in Houston on Christmas Day in 1948, Barbara Mandrell grew from a child prodigy into one of country music’s most dazzling all-around entertainers. Before she could drive, she was already mastering steel guitar, accordion, saxophone, and more—skills that later fueled her famously high-energy live shows.

By the late ’70s and early ’80s, Mandrell was a certified country superstar with hits like “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed,” “Years,” and the anthem “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.” Her blend of country, pop, and showmanship gave her rare crossover power, drawing in fans far beyond the traditional country crowd.
