The Specials

The Specials formed in Coventry in 1977 and became the defining voice of the UK 2 Tone movement, fusing Jamaican ska with punk urgency and sharp social commentary. Led by songwriter and keyboardist Jerry Dammers, the band tackled racism, unemployment, and urban tension with dancefloor-ready grooves that carried real political weight. Their early singles and debut album remain landmarks of British music, introducing a multiracial lineup and a sound that was both joyful and confrontational.
