The Guess Who

What does it take to write a hit? "A good story," Randy Bachman might answer. The guitarist of The Guess Who found himself one evening surrounded by three gang members on a bridge in Berkley who wanted to do him harm. But suddenly a car appeared on the road, a woman jumped out and raged. While two of the hoodlums fled, the third got his lesson: "You're good for nothing! Don't look for a job, don't take out the trash and run after all the girls in town. I know what's going on. Get in the car now!" The man shrugged his shoulders, got in, and the woman slammed the door. "And you ain't getting no sugar tonight!" she shouted before the car drove off. The relieved Bachman kept the phrase in mind and wrote a song. The single "No Sugar Tonight" topped the Billboard charts in 1970.
