Harry Belafonte

Harry Belafonte is an American singer, actor, and social activist who was born on March 1, 1927, in Harlem, New York City. He is best known for his distinctive voice and his contributions to the American folk music tradition, as well as his work as a humanitarian and civil rights activist.

Belafonte was also a pioneer in promoting African-American culture on television and in film. He starred in the first major studio film to feature a predominantly black cast, "Carmen Jones," in 1954, and he also appeared in several other films and TV shows throughout his career.

Belafonte has been a lifelong activist for civil rights and social justice causes. He was a close friend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was a prominent supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. He has also been an advocate for humanitarian causes, including hunger relief and HIV/AIDS awareness.
