Relying on their outstanding songwriting and vocals, the
Bee Gees were able to craft a musical career that started in Australia in the late 50s and continued into the new millennium, incorporating a range of different music styles. In the 60s, the project of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb was based in the UK, making
psychedelic pop. In the 70s, when it seemed like their career was about to ebb,
Eric Clapton helped the band out of their commercial and creative hole, bringing them to Miami, where they worked on their 1974 album "Mr. Natural" alongside producer
Arif Mardin, with a new emphasis on dance rhythms and funky beats. The album's first single climbed to number one of the US charts, followed by the Bee Gee's famous participation in the soundtrack of 1977’s Saturday Night Fever, which cemented their reputation as the biggest
disco band in the world. After the band was relatively invisible during the 80s following the disco demolition night and the homophobic and racist crackdown on disco music, they celebrated their comeback in the 90s with renewed interest after Robin passed away in 1996. The Bee Gees overcame many challenges including a brief split in 1969, and have influenced artists like
Justin Timberlake or
Montreal over the course of their career, which ended with Maurice's passing in 2003. Nevertheless, the Bee Gees' timeless music remains celebrated until today.
